The pickaxe is a tool that's used to mine certain materials from stone objects quicker, and does more damage to stone objects than most other tools or weapons. A pickaxe is very useful in survival, as it allows you to extract stone/metal resources with much more efficiency, which become crucial later on. Although it's used to quickly obtain precious stones and metals, it's ironically crafted with iron, meaning that you'll have to mine iron by hand before you can craft the pickaxe.
Before you have the pickaxe you can mine with the hammer in hand.
